Wash-Sale & 1099-B Year-End WorkbookUS Stocks & ETFs

Find possible wash sales your broker can't see, work out the basis adjustment, and walk into tax season with your 1099-B already checked.

Overview

Your broker's 1099-B reports wash sales only for the same security in the same account. It can't see your IRA, your other brokerage account, or the "similar" fund you bought after selling at a loss. This workbook gives you one place to log every lot from every account, checks the 30 days before and after each loss sale, and shows the questions to take to your tax pro. It doesn't decide anything for you and doesn't file anything.

What's inside

  • Start Here: how to fill it in, and the caveats in plain English
  • Trade Log: one row per lot across Taxable / IRA / Roth IRA / Spouse / Other accounts, with an optional "substantially identical" group
  • Wash-Sale Checker: the ±30-day window, full or partial, the disallowed loss, which lot takes the basis adjustment, and whether your broker will likely report it
  • 1099-B Reconcile: type your broker's lines (boxes 1d, 1e, 1g) and see MATCH, CHECK (with the reason) or NOT IN YOUR LOG
  • Summary: short- and long-term totals, wash-sale totals, amounts lost to IRA buys and the gap to your 1099-B
  • Excel edition, Google Sheets edition and a Google Sheets copy link
  • 5-page PDF guide with a worked example: full, partial via an IRA buy, a judgment-call "similar fund", and a December sale with a January buy-back

Flags people miss: IRA buys can trigger a wash sale and the loss generally isn't added to the IRA shares' basis (Rev. Rul. 2008-5); brokers track only identical securities (same CUSIP) in the same account; "substantially identical" is a judgment call; January buys can wash December losses.

Who it's not for

Crypto, futures, section 1256 contracts or complex options strategies; mutual funds using average cost; anyone looking for tax advice, a tax return or a substitute for a CPA.

FAQ

Is this tax advice?

No. It's educational record-keeping. Confirm with a CPA.

Which Excel version do I need?

Excel 2019 or later, or Microsoft 365 (it uses MINIFS). Google Sheets and LibreOffice also work.

Does it handle IRA purchases?

Yes. Log IRA buys in the Trade Log; the checker flags them and treats the disallowed loss as not added to basis (Rev. Rul. 2008-5).

Will it match my broker's 1099-B?

Often not exactly, and that's the point. The Reconcile tab shows each difference and the likely reason (an IRA buy, another account, a similar fund or a fee).

What doesn't it do?

It only knows the trades you enter. Chained wash sales and the carried-over holding period are flagged for review, not calculated. Stocks and ETFs only.

Can I get a refund?
